SunnyD Vodka Seltzer VFX
What do you do when you’ve finished a shoot for SunnyD’s new vodka seltzer, put it out in the world, and the orange flavor does so well you decide to add strawberry and pineapple too?
You hit us up to handle the visual effects (VFX) lift of adding new flavors in post!
We had fun partnering with Humanaut on their SunnyD Vodka Seltzer commercials. They had already completed the production several months prior, and had aired the original three ads. With the product success, SunnyD decided to add the strawberry and pineapple flavor options.
We had eight shots to fix in post:
Instead of having to re-create the original set, re-hire actors, and re-shoot the whole thing, Humanaut coordinated a much smaller shoot of the 3 flavors on a baseplate. We then took this photography to incorporate into the original commercials:
We updated these pedestal shots by directing our software to track the original can’s location frame by frame. Once that was accurate, we replaced the original single can with the updated three can photograph—matched into the original shot perfectly.
In other instances, cans needed to be removed. We filled in the areas with what would be there otherwise frame by frame:
In this scene where cans needed to be changed from orange to the strawberry red or pineapple yellow, we rotoscoped the desired cans to isolate them and alter the colors.
And in the words of SunnyD’s “DEO,” bada bing bada boom! Here’s a quick video that shows more of our before and afters in action:
Check out the final ads below. Since airing these commercials 6 months ago, they’ve garnered 4.6 million views on YouTube. I think we’d call it a successful campaign! Now who wants to try it?
